MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCE TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE MR. YAP NYUK MIN. EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE NEVER BEEN TAUGHT BY HIM. A 'TEACHER' IS A NOBLE PROFESSION AND WITHOUT 'TEACHER' WE, STUDENTS WOULD NOT BE WHAT WE ARE TODAY. I BOW MY HEAD IN RESPECT OF HIS DEMISE. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL, REST IN PEACE. AMEN.

  4. My heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr Yap Nyuk Min.
Here was a man who had influence my life so much. He never taught me as a teacher, but he was the teacher-in- charge of Ktgss Hockey team.
Here was the man who changed this tall lanky boy with an inferioir complex that weighs a ton, who cannot fit into the crowd cos too thin and tall, voice so soft and timid nobody bothers to listen to, but must play a sport for the extra curriculum activities.
Mr Yap gave me a pair of leg paddings, stood me between the post and made me stop those solid hockey balls traveling at speeds faster that Roger Federer's record serves. Lonely position? yeh but I fit in like fish in water and got my name commented in the newspaper every once a while. (Big deal back then).
Either he saw my potential as a goalkeeper or he simply want to stop people insulting me on the field!!! Whatever it was,the new found confidence transformed my life.Suddenly a lot of friends, talk also people stop to listen, laugh and the crowd laugh together, suddenly too tall was not an issue anymore.
Later years I bump into Mr Yap quite regularly at Public Bank. Now I regret I was never able to fully express my gratitude to him.
Still I did tell him that he had influenced me in a major way. His response 'IS IT???' He loves to use that phrase.
He imparted 2 phylosophy that also significantly influence me.
    1. In looking for happiness and a fuller life with peace of mind, he has this to say and I quote'It is not how much money you make, it is how much you can comfortably keep that matters.'
    2. In making my decision whether to resign from my job and venture into doing my own business, his encouraging words in Hokkien and I quote ' Mai Kia la. Lang bo aneh geh si e la'
(translated: No need to be scared, man not that easy to die la)
I will miss his swagerring gait and booming voice. Mr Yap, a good man who has walked this earth.
May God Bless and keep his Soul and Rest in Peace my friend

  5. RIGHTLY SAID, TOMMY.

AS I TYPE THIS, I AM SHEDDING MY TEARS...AS I RECALLED WHAT A NICE TEACHER & MAN HE WAS...

THOUGH HE NEVER TAUGHT ME, HE WAS VERY CLOSED TO US SENIOR BOYS IN SCHOOL...BEING OUR ''TAI KO''...HOW HE BROUGHT A FEW OF US...JONG NYAN CHONG, ANG SWEE GUAN, CHEW MEN TECK & I...IN HIS SMALL ''DATSUN'' CAR TO HIS HOUSE TO HANG AROUND & TREAT US COFFEE...

EVEN AFTER SCHOOL DAYS, WE STILL MET UP WITH HIM WHEN HE WAS IN THE RENOVATION BUSINESS & TYPING SCHOOL.

I AM GONNA MISS HIS LOUD VOICE & LAUGHTER...HIS TRADEMARK...

LAST NIGHT, SIONG MOH & I WENT TO HIS HOUSE TO PAY OUR LAST RESPECT...HIS WIFE SAID THAT HE WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BB...ALAS...IT NEVER COMES...

    OUR CONDOLENCE TO HIS FAMILY.

  6. Tommy,
You knew Mr. Yap as a coach, i knew him as a qualified umpure. No-nonsense man in the quadrangle.
For someone like you who had an inferior complex but now full of confidence and wisdom, you certainly would make any teacher proud of you then, and now. Wonder if you would look down from your lofty height(you are tall, aren't you) to notice me, a junior and a teacher, to shake my hand and hear "Well done, my dear!"

  7. Poh Meng Eng,
Funny thing I was tall as a kid, even in my early teens, but i seem to stop gaining any longtitude after school now gaining a bit more latitude haha and hopefully not gaining any attitude problem. Thanks. see you in the BB. ps i will look straight and still notice you.
