Big Bash a Big Blash

Good morning People! I went home from BB2010 reunion dinner early in the morning with an aching feet due to too much standing and walking and I have no regrets as it was all worth it! Thanks to Ted Yong for arranging the fantastic dinner at such a fantastic venue..thanks also to all who made an effort to be present to make the re-union a real success..especially to Lau Hui Kiong, Joo Sim and Anthony Chan who flew all the way from Canada, Hongkong and Kuala Lumpur just to be with us and our "Miss Chong" who came down from Sibu. The reunion was not just greetings and hugs among ex-classmates and ex-schoolmates but also among the teachers who had not seen each other since retirement or some other reasons such as posted elsewhere.

Mr. Wong Sze Yong who gave a speech on behalf of the teachers was very inspiring...I can see he was very proud to see many successful pioneer Kuching Townians...doctors, PhD, engineers, lawyers, consultants and journalist [that's me..hehehe]. I've covered a lot of official functions as a journalist and I heard many speeches on SCORE [Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy] made by our Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, federal ministers as well as state ministers who targetted on younger generation to get ready for the full development of SCORE come 2030 where an estimate of 1.6million jobs will be up for grabs. Much to my surprise our beloved teacher Mr. Wong apparently was more optimistic than any of these politicians for he targetted at his "50 years old" ex-students to contribute to the development of SCORE NOW. This showed how much our teachers believe in us, how proud they are of us, how much confidence they have in us to go help develop the state.

Personally, I felt it was a swell gathering all worthwhile those evening meetings the committee held at coffee-shops, eateries etc. Btw, I did not complete my duty as Secretary because I did not prepare the last minutes....hehehehehe..

Please feel free to leave your comments on BB2010 and I might quote some in my write-ups for the newspaper. What is/are your opinions on the importance of such re-unions? What was/were your greatest moments at BB2010?

For me, I was very happy to see Irene Tan coming to the re-union alone..her late husband Sim Khee Tee [pioneer 1] was one of the enthusiastic committee member looking forward BB2010.

There was SALLEH! I know Salleh very well when he was the Press Secretary for Dato Sri Adenen Satem and YB Bolhassan Di and I even had his hp no. saved in my hp and yet never knew he was my schoolmate! Imagine my surprise when he showed up last night [thought he was accompany his Townian wife or something]

And there was our clown..sorry..can remember his name..he had the stage all to himself and tried to play the keyboard on the chairs...

Great evening! and thanks to ALL OF U WHO MADE IT HAPPENED!!!!!

  8. On behalf of the PTA SMK Bandar Kuching No.1 (the name many have been translated but we are still better known as Kuching Town, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the organising committee and all pioneers of KTGSS1 for your generous contributions. (Special mention goes to Uncle TK and Abang for going around promoting "Milo Sihat")
Kuching Town is a very special school. We still have a notorious reputation and every new staff (teachers and principals) will be terrified once they are posted to the school, most do not want to leave once there. Even till today students are very attached to and love the school.
Poh ME and myself truly enjoyed showing you guys around the school and we are proud of the changes in the school. Keep Kuching Town in your heart and we promise we will do our best for KTGSS.
Thank you for making us part of your BB2010.

  11. Reading thro' all the postings made me realise that the committee that put together the whole shebang did a tremendous job in ferreting out everyone within a short span of time to come together for a reunion where it enabled each and every single one of us to rebuild bridges under which much water has flowed. We left school fresh faced and eager to conquer the world and somehow along the way the bridges that we built during the years spent together in out alma mater was allowed to fall into disrepair which we never really had the time to repair and rebuilt. But the night of 17 Feb. 2010 gave us that opportunity to rebuilt the bridges, reaquaint ourselves with each other, built new bridges and like Billie aka Ah Noun said it so succintly, rekindle out friendship. I love that. Some of us although living in Kuching never ran into each other until that night while others we heard through the grapevive have put down roots elsewhere but still made the effort to come back and renew ties. A few left us too soon and left a void in our hearts. I will be looking forward to the next gathering whenever that will be. Let's not be starngers anymore now that we have the net and facebook and the omnipresent and venerable handphone........cheers everyone.

  12. Lu Si Hamang?Siapa Ni?Who can That Be??????
Those were the questions pouring out that night during the reunion!A night where the aging mind are being pressed to reconcile the young image of a 16/17 yrs old against the new matured look n posture of a 50/51/53 yrs.!
The mind was further pressured by the way everybody carry themselves with the sophistication 35 yrs has trained us:the art of make up which Chanel,Dior or maybe CK/Dunhill perfumes against a backdrop of smelly boys n girls sweating to the hair with out deodorant n pony tails at best!
The mind was puzzled how and when so n so can talk with such an accent..hokkien with that limited vocab to the popular words...Brunei Malay not BM..against the basics what the teachers taught us.!?!
The mind almost stop to think when confronted with the dresses worn...bare back, shawl, flowing night dress, head gears n matching scarfs...batiks,layback linen, checked long sleeves...most of all Jeans pants n shirts...aginst the school uniform which are supposed to be white but really yellowish!!
The mind refused to think further when drinks brought out the real personality of some which have been kept hidden....where some can even play virtual piano n drum....Yam Seng to the loudest of all voice...against the plastics syrup drinks and antau chendol !
The mind decided to stop COMPARING and get loose to enjoy the night...the night that everything went free.....how you enjoy the night n what effect it has on your life only you can feel it....Hoooooolah a night to remember ! A night that should come often....cheers ! I am proud to be a Townian.

  14. I think it is only right that I should say a big thank you to the committee for making this reunion possible. It was worth every ounce of resources and effort on my part just to be able to meet up with so many of our teachers and enjoy the company of long lost friends.
I join KTGSS in 1973, which makes it a bit ackward when the group photos of each pioneers were taken. Many of my classmates who turn up on the night had a year in transition class, meaning that they join in 1972. So when I did a head count, there were only 3 of us in the 1973 group! So what to do, ' bin pueh kaw kaw'(face skin thick thick) just sneak in with the '72 batch lo.
Thanks to this reunion, my form five classmates from the classes of '77 are organising a get together on 27th this month at the Chef's Special restaurant ( next to timberland)
At the same time I get to meet up with so many classmates the past two days, totally enjoying myself with all this activities.
So Mr Kho Ah Choon and Gang, a BIG THank YOU.

All in all, from what I have to say is that the reunion is fantastic although I did not have a chance to socialize with everyone, it is an memorable evening for me.

It is nice to see all of you after 35 years and see how well everyone is doing.

I have good time (and laughs) reminiscing the good old school days.

Lastly, I just want to thank everyone especially the organizing committee for the wonderful evening.

  34. Dear All,

Cannot believe that it have been more than a month since we attended BB2010. It is still fresh in my memory. Sorry that I could not get to talk to everyone. Need at least a couple of days to catch up properly.

Million thanks to the committee for doing a great job, and the visit to KTGSS was memorable. I would not have missed it for the world. Unfortunately it is quite sad to see the state of the school. Perhaps we should put our head together and perhaps some contribution for some worthwile projects.

I hope that we can keep the momentum of our comradeship. Reading thru some of the postings made me realised that quite a few of our schoolmates are no longer with us. Folks, I thought we only hit the 50 mark! Life is so short....

Though it was a long trip for me, but I'd do it again for the next get together!

Since coming back from BB2010, I have caught up with those residing in Australia, including Anna Sim Pah Moi, in Brisbane.

    Keep in touch..........
